If you’ve ever asked an AI chatbot to solve a math problem, you’ve probably noticed something strange: sometimes they nail it, sometimes they confidently give you the wrong answer, and sometimes they refuse to even try.
We put ChatGPT (GPT-4), Claude (Sonnet 3.5), and Google Gemini (1.5 Pro) through a series of math tests to see which model handles numbers best—and where you should double-check their work.
Basic Arithmetic and Word Problems
All three models handle simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division without breaking a sweat. Where things get interesting is word problems that require multi-step reasoning.
We tested this prompt: “I bought 3 shirts at $24.99 each, got a 15% discount on the total, then paid 8% sales tax. What did I pay?”
- ChatGPT: Correct answer ($68.47), showed clear step-by-step work
- Claude: Correct answer, formatted the breakdown neatly with explanations
- Gemini: Correct answer, slightly less detailed in showing the steps
Winner for basic math: Tie. All three are reliable for everyday calculations and word problems.
Algebra and Equation Solving
We asked each model to solve for x in a quadratic equation: “Solve 2x² – 5x – 3 = 0”
ChatGPT and Claude both provided correct solutions (x = 3 and x = -0.5) using the quadratic formula, with clear explanations of each step. Gemini also got it right but was slightly more verbose in its explanation.
When we asked them to solve a system of three equations with three variables, all three models succeeded, but Claude formatted the answer most clearly, making it easiest to follow the logic.
Winner for algebra: Claude, by a narrow margin for presentation clarity.
Calculus and Advanced Math
This is where the cracks start to show. We asked each model to find the derivative of a moderately complex function: “What is the derivative of (3x² + 2x) / (x – 1)?”
All three models correctly identified this as requiring the quotient rule. ChatGPT and Claude both arrived at the correct derivative and simplified it properly. Gemini got the mechanics right but made a simplification error in the final answer.
For integral calculus, we tested: “Find the integral of x·e^x dx”
- ChatGPT: Correct (x·e^x – e^x + C), used integration by parts correctly
- Claude: Correct, with particularly clear explanation of why integration by parts was needed
- Gemini: Correct answer, but took a longer route to get there
Winner for calculus: ChatGPT and Claude tie. Gemini lags slightly in accuracy on complex problems.
Where They All Struggle
We found consistent weak spots across all three models:
Large number calculations: When we asked them to multiply two 8-digit numbers, all three occasionally made errors or rounded incorrectly. If precision matters, use a calculator.
Probability and combinatorics: Word problems involving permutations, combinations, and conditional probability tripped up all three models at least once. Claude was slightly more reliable here, but you should verify the logic yourself.
Proofs: When asked to prove mathematical theorems, all three models can outline an approach, but they sometimes skip steps or make logical leaps that wouldn’t pass in an actual proof.
The Bottom Line
For everyday math—budgeting, unit conversions, basic algebra—all three models are reliable and fast. ChatGPT and Claude are neck-and-neck for advanced math, with Claude edging ahead on explanation clarity. Gemini is solid but makes more small errors on complex problems.
The real takeaway: always verify important calculations. AI chatbots are excellent math tutors and can save you time on tedious calculations, but they’re not infallible calculators. If the numbers matter—taxes, engineering, research—double-check the work or use a dedicated tool.
