Vision capabilities have become table stakes for AI models in 2026. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all let you upload images and ask questions about them. But they handle visual tasks very differently.
We ran the same set of images through all three models to see which one performs best for common real-world tasks. The results were more nuanced than we expected.
Reading Text From Images
All three models can extract text from photos and screenshots, but accuracy varies significantly.
ChatGPT (GPT-4) handled clean, well-lit text without issues. It struggled slightly with handwritten notes—sometimes missing words or misreading similar letters. For receipts and documents, it was reliable but occasionally skipped small print.
Claude (Sonnet 3.5) was the most accurate for text extraction in our tests. It caught details the others missed, especially in dense documents with multiple columns or complex layouts. Handwriting recognition was noticeably better. When we uploaded a whiteboard photo with messy marker text, Claude got it right while the others faltered.
Gemini performed well on standard text but made more errors with unusual fonts or rotated images. It did excel at multilingual text—switching between languages in the same image without prompting.
Analyzing Screenshots and Diagrams
Understanding the meaning and context of images—not just reading text—is where differences really emerged.
We uploaded a complex dashboard screenshot with graphs, tables, and UI elements. ChatGPT described what it saw accurately but stayed surface-level unless we asked follow-up questions. It identified chart types and labels but didn’t interpret trends without prompting.
Claude went deeper without being asked. It noticed patterns in the data, pointed out which metrics were trending up or down, and even flagged a potential error in one of the graphs. For anyone analyzing visual data regularly, this proactive analysis saves time.
Gemini was solid but less detailed. It described the overall layout well and could answer specific questions about elements in the image, but didn’t offer insights unprompted.
Identifying Objects and Scenes
For general image recognition—photos of objects, places, or people—all three models performed well, with subtle differences.
ChatGPT and Gemini were equally good at identifying common objects and describing scenes. Both could tell you what’s in a photo, suggest context, and answer questions about specific details.
Claude was slightly more cautious. It described what it could confirm but was less likely to speculate. For instance, when shown a photo of a building, ChatGPT and Gemini guessed architectural styles and possible locations. Claude described the visible features without assumptions.
This conservatism is helpful if accuracy matters more than creativity—say, for accessibility descriptions or documentation.
Creative and Design Feedback
We also tested how each model handled subjective visual tasks like critiquing a logo design or suggesting improvements to a slide deck.
ChatGPT gave balanced, structured feedback. It pointed out design principles (contrast, hierarchy, whitespace) and offered concrete suggestions. Responses felt like they came from a knowledgeable generalist.
Claude provided more opinionated critiques. It didn’t just describe—it evaluated. For a slide with too much text, Claude said it felt “cluttered and hard to follow” and explained why. This makes it useful for design iterations.
Gemini was the most encouraging. Feedback was constructive but gentle, often starting with what worked before suggesting changes. If you want supportive critique rather than blunt assessment, Gemini fits that tone.
Which One Should You Use?
The best model depends on your task:
- Claude if you need accurate text extraction, detailed analysis, or critical feedback. It’s the strongest all-around vision model right now.
- ChatGPT for general-purpose image tasks and reliable performance across the board. It’s consistently good without standout weaknesses.
- Gemini if you’re working with multilingual content, need supportive feedback, or want fast responses with decent accuracy.
One practical note: Claude and ChatGPT both let you upload multiple images in a single conversation and reference them later. Gemini handles this too, but context management feels less smooth when juggling several images at once.
Vision capabilities are improving fast. These models will all get better at visual tasks in the coming months. For now, Claude has a noticeable edge for anyone doing serious work with images—especially text-heavy or analytical tasks.
