You’ve got a 50-page PDF to analyze, a dense technical report to summarize, or a contract to review. You open ChatGPT, then wonder: should I be using Claude instead?
Both models claim impressive context windows—ChatGPT handles up to 128,000 tokens, while Claude can process 200,000 tokens. But raw capacity doesn’t tell the whole story. After testing both tools with research papers, legal documents, and technical manuals, here’s what actually matters when you’re working with long documents.
Context Window vs. Actual Comprehension
A large context window means the model can accept your document. It doesn’t guarantee the model will understand it evenly throughout.
In practice, both ChatGPT and Claude show what researchers call “lost in the middle” behavior—they pay more attention to information at the beginning and end of documents than content buried in the middle sections. This affects how well they answer questions about specific details.
Claude tends to maintain more consistent attention across longer documents. When I uploaded a 40-page research paper and asked questions about methodology details in section 3 (roughly page 18), Claude retrieved specific information more reliably than ChatGPT, which occasionally defaulted to generalizations or asked me to point it toward the relevant section.
ChatGPT, however, often provides faster initial responses and excels at generating executive summaries that capture the document’s overall arc.
File Format Handling
Both models accept PDFs, Word documents, and text files, but they handle formatting differently.
Claude preserves document structure better, especially with PDFs that include tables, footnotes, or complex layouts. When I uploaded a financial report with embedded tables, Claude accurately referenced specific figures from those tables. ChatGPT sometimes struggled with table data, occasionally merging columns or misreading values.
ChatGPT handles scanned documents and image-based PDFs more gracefully, thanks to better OCR integration. If your document is a scan rather than native digital text, ChatGPT will likely extract the content more accurately.
Question Types That Make a Difference
The type of analysis you need affects which model performs better.
Claude excels at:
- Detailed citation and quote extraction with page references
- Comparing information across different sections
- Identifying contradictions or inconsistencies within the document
- Providing nuanced analysis of arguments or methodology
ChatGPT excels at:
- High-level summaries and key takeaways
- Simplifying technical content for general audiences
- Generating action items or next steps based on document content
- Creative applications (turning a report into a presentation outline)
Practical Recommendations
For contracts, legal documents, or compliance reviews where precision matters, Claude’s attention to detail and citation accuracy make it the better choice. Its ability to reference specific clauses and identify buried terms is more reliable.
For research papers or technical documentation where you need both summary and deep dives, try both: use ChatGPT for the initial overview, then switch to Claude for detailed questions about specific sections.
For business reports where you need to extract insights and create derivative content (slides, emails, briefings), ChatGPT’s speed and creative reformatting capabilities give it an edge.
One more consideration: Claude’s Projects feature lets you keep documents loaded across conversations, which is invaluable if you’re working with the same document over several days. ChatGPT’s Memory feature can recall context but doesn’t maintain uploaded files between sessions unless you’re using the same chat thread.
The Bottom Line
Neither model is definitively “better” for long documents—they have different strengths. Claude wins on precision, structure preservation, and sustained attention across lengthy content. ChatGPT wins on speed, summarization, and creative repurposing.
The smartest approach? Use both strategically based on what you need from each document, rather than picking a single champion.
