When to Use Extended Thinking Mode
Switch to extended thinking when the task involves complexity, nuance, or potential mistakes:
- Debugging code — Claude benefits from tracing through logic step-by-step rather than guessing at fixes.
- Analyzing data or spreadsheets — especially when you’re asking it to identify patterns, outliers, or recommend decisions based on numbers.
- Solving logic puzzles or math problems — tasks where one wrong step early on ruins the final answer.
- Evaluating trade-offs or making recommendations — “Should I use PostgreSQL or MongoDB for this project?” benefits from weighing multiple factors.
- Writing long-form content with structure — like a research report, white paper, or detailed guide where internal coherence matters.
- Reviewing contracts, legal language, or technical documentation — when precision and careful interpretation are critical.
Extended thinking mode shines when you need Claude to show its work. If you’ve ever gotten a confident-sounding answer that turned out to be wrong, this mode reduces that risk by making the reasoning visible.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
Ask yourself: Would a human need to think carefully before answering this, or could they respond off the top of their head?
If it’s the former, use extended thinking. If it’s the latter, stick with standard chat.
One more consideration: cost and speed. Extended thinking mode uses more tokens and takes longer. If you’re on a free tier or working under time pressure, reserve it for tasks where the quality gain is worth the trade-off.
Try Both and Compare
If you’re unsure which mode to use for a recurring task, try both once and compare the results. You’ll quickly develop intuition for when the extra reasoning time pays off.
