What Are Claude Projects?
Projects are containers that group related conversations together. Each project can have custom instructions that Claude remembers across every chat in that project, plus you can upload documents that Claude can reference automatically.
Think of them like folders, but smarter: instead of just organizing past chats, they actively shape how Claude behaves in future conversations within that project.
Projects are available on Claude Pro and Team plans. If you’re on the free tier, you won’t see this feature yet.
Setting Up Your First Project
Here’s how to create a project in Claude:
- Log into Claude and look for the “Projects” section in the left sidebar
- Click “Create Project” or the plus icon
- Give your project a clear name (e.g., “Marketing Content,” “Python Coding,” “Novel Draft”)
- Add custom instructions that apply to every conversation in this project—for example, “You’re helping me write blog posts for a tech audience. Keep explanations clear and use examples.”
- Upload any reference documents Claude should know about—style guides, project briefs, research papers, or data files
- Click “Create” and start your first conversation
Every new chat you start within this project will automatically use those instructions and have access to those documents. You don’t need to re-explain context or re-upload files each time.
Smart Ways to Use Projects
Here are some practical project setups that work well:
Content Creation Project: Upload your brand voice guide and previous articles. Set instructions like “Match the tone of the uploaded style guide” and “Reference past articles to stay consistent.” Now every blog post or social media draft stays on-brand automatically.
Coding Project: Upload your codebase documentation or API references. Instruct Claude to “Use TypeScript with React hooks” or whatever framework you’re working in. Claude will give you consistent, contextually appropriate code suggestions across all conversations.
Research Project: Upload academic papers, reports, or data. Ask Claude to “Summarize findings in bullet points and always cite the source document.” Perfect for literature reviews or market research.
Learning Project: Tell Claude “I’m learning Spanish at intermediate level. Correct my mistakes gently and explain grammar.” Upload vocabulary lists or textbook chapters. Each practice conversation builds on the last.
Managing Your Projects
You can edit project instructions and documents anytime. Click into the project settings to add new reference materials as your work evolves or refine the instructions based on what’s working.
Archive projects you’re not actively using to keep your sidebar clean. Archived projects and their conversations are still searchable—you’re just tucking them away.
One limitation: you can’t move existing conversations into a project after the fact. Projects only apply to new chats created within them. If you want to continue an old conversation with project context, you’ll need to start fresh and reference or paste in the relevant parts.
The number of projects you can create depends on your plan. Pro users typically get around 5 active projects; Team plans get more.

Projects turn Claude from a chatbot into a genuine workspace tool. Instead of explaining yourself every time or hunting through dozens of old chats, you create persistent contexts for different areas of your life and work.
